Nicolas Melendrez, 63, of Sunnyside passed away on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

Nicolas was born Dec. 6, 1948 in Carrizo Springs, Texas, to Alfonso and Petra (Reyes) Melendrez. He received his early education in Texas.

On April 29, 1972 Nicolas married Janie Mirelez at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.

He was a very dedicated and hard working man, who enjoyed working with his hands.

Nicolas cherished time spent with his family and close friends especially the special moments he shared with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed dancing to Tejano music, watching western movies starring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood and the refreshment of a cold beer.

Everyone who knew Nicolas could see he had a giving heart and was willing help anyone in need.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.

Nicolas is survived by his children, Rachel (John) Lewis of Sunnyside, Alberto Melendrez of Lacey, Abel (Karema) Melendrez and Ray (Ashley) Melendrez, all of Fayetteville, N.C., Noel Melendrez and Nicolas Melendrez Jr., both of Sunnyside and "God Given" daughter, Sophia Rubalcava; 14 grandchildren; and siblings, Aurora (Jose) Escobar, Angela Melendrez, Abelia (Juan) Ramirez, Mary (Jim) Moser, Pee-wee (Hernan) Cortez, Cruz (Fidel) Amaro, Santa Clara (Nick) Myers, Richard (Mary) Melendrez, Charra (Richard) Garza, Julia Melendrez and Carmen Melendrez.

He was preceded in death by his parents; older brothers Alberto Melendrez and Ramiro Melendrez and younger brother, Vidal Antonio Melendrez.

Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, from 2 to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.
