During a ceremony held last night, Tuesday, Sunnyside High School coaches honored fall sport athletes.
The honors included not only efforts on the field of play, but also in the classroom for the student athletes.
For Grizzly football, Eduardo Salmeron garnered MVP honors on offense, while the defensive MVP award was presented to Austin Carman.
SHS football award winners also included Brandon Daley as most inspirational, Nathan Meyer as most improved and Joseph Contreras as team captain. Trey Serl garnered the coaches award for Grizzly football.
Big 9 all-league football awards announced last night were Marcus Sanchez, first team-return specialist; Austin Carman, first team-offensive line and second team-defensive line; Cameron Schlenker, second team-offensive line; Joseph Contreras, second team-defensive back and second team-wide receiver; Ramon Hernandez, second team-running back; Eric Amaro, honorable mention-defensive line; Sergio Lugo, honorable mention-defensive line; Nathan Meyer, honorable mention-linebacker; Shawn Christensen, honorable mention-linebacker; Trey Serl, honorable mention-defensive back; Eduardo Salmeron, honorable mention-quarterback.
In the boys and girls cross country programs, Audiel Sanchez and Vanessa Quiroz earned most valuable runner honors. The coaches awards were presented to Javier Tapia and Claudia Rivera, while Alvin Lopez and Kayla Gonzalez were tapped as captains. Quiroz also earned selection as an all-league honorable mention.
The Lady Grizzly volleyball team awards for 2012 featured Kendall Platsman as MVP and Alex Hays as most improved. Volleyball honors were also earned by Geordan Skyles, Heart and Hustle; Amber Cornwell, team captain; and Vanessa Alvarez, coaches award.
The Sunnyside High School girls soccer program selected Macenzie Butler as most improved, Jessica Leon as most inspirational, Erika Garcia as defensive MVP and for the coaches award, and Susana Arreola as offensive MVP.
All-league honors for Lady Grizzly soccer went to Arreola, first team forward; Butler, second team goalkeeper; Karina Perez, second team midfielder; and Garcia, honorable mention defender.
The SHS swim program recognized Summer Hazzard as most improved and Cassadie Moore as MVP.
Rally squad honors for the fall season were presented to Elizabeth Bobadilla, team captain; Shawna Santini, coaches award; Stephanie Romero, MVC; Jacqueline Kranz, Spirit Award; Jessica Magana, most improved.
Selected as Columbia Basin Big 9 fall student-athletes were Brandon Daley for football and Marthy Hernandez for cheerleading.
Overall academic statistics showed that 114 of 214 fall athletes at SHS had a 3.0 GPA or better and that 55 of them had a GPA of 3.65 or better.
The average GPA for fall student athletes at SHS was 2.995.
