Armed robbery, carjackings suspect captured in Colorado

GRANDVIEW - The suspect in an armed robbery in Grandview has been arrested in Colorado by the Colorado State Patrol after a high speed pursuit that reached speeds of 140 mph.

Marcel Maldonado, 21, of Grandview is suspected of robbing a mini mart in the 100 block of East Wine Country Road last week with what witnesses described as a rifle.

The suspect fled in a Cadillac sedan which wrecked in the 2700 block of Wilson Highway. The suspect then used his weapon to force a local resident to give him the keys to a pick-up truck.

The suspect was next spotted at the westbound rest area of I-82 at mile post 22, where he carjacked a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.

The Jetta was last spotted in Washington state headed north on Highway 97 across Blewett Pass. Ellensburg law enforcement officers pursued the vehicle for a time but terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.

At the time of his arrest, Maldonado was driving the stolen Jetta. Colorado officers also recovered a firearm that may be the same one used in the crimes in Yakima County.

Maldonado is being held on Colorado charges as well as the Yakima County arrest warrant for robbery. His bail is set at one million dollars.
