Sunnyside receives road upgrade funds

City of Sunnyside Superintendent of Public Works Shane Fisher told the city council at Monday night's meeting that the city has received Transportation Improvement Board funding for two projects totaling nearly $2 million.

Fisher said one project is an overlay from 16th Street to McDonald's on Yakima Valley Highway. The total cost of the project is $315,000 and the city is getting $283,000 from the board.

The other project involves improvements to the intersection of Yakima Valley Highway and 16th Street. The total cost of the project is $1.82 million and the board will fund $1.62 million of that.

Fisher said the city may combine the projects, starting with the intersection improvements and then doing the overlay, to save money. The project will go through planning during 2013 and Fisher said construction should start in June of 2014.
