GRANDVIEW - Upholding a long held tradition customarily followed in Mexico and some Central American countries, Grandview's Iglesia Del Pueblo Church will host its second annual Las Posadas event on Friday, Dec. 21.
The tradition involves a reenactment of the journey of Mary and Joseph in search for a room at the inn.
Those participating in the celebration, said Antonio Sanchez, will sing a carol that involves asking for shelter as they proceed from the corner of Cedar and East Second streets to the church. The group will stop at designated homes, asking if there is any room for Mary and Joseph to stay.
The homeowners, said Sanchez, will turn the participants away. He said it will be at the Iglesia Del Pueblo, located at 406 East Second Street, that the group will be provided shelter.
"At the church, we will have food and a pinata for the children," he said.
The celebration culminates at the church with a potluck feast, songs, games and the breaking of the piñata.
Anyone wishing to attend the event can call Sanchez at 509-778-2607 for more information or to inquire as to whether or not they should bring anything to the celebration.
The Dec. 21 event begins at 5 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Festivities will be held until 8 p.m.
