Knights notch 42-28 victory

It was all about the connections and communicating for the Sunnyside Christian Knights football team, which defeated Pomeroy this past Friday, 42-28, at Clem Senn Field.

Coach Ray Hernandez said the players would need to stick to their assignments if they were going to win and the Knights delivered for themselves, as well as for the coach.

Hernandez was pleased with how well the Knights played. "They showed confidence on the field...they trusted one another," he said.

He believes that trust was key to defeating the Pirates.

"They had all the components one would expect from a good team," Hernandez said of his squad.

He said the defense stuffed Pomeroy in the red zone three times, keeping the Pirates from scoring.

Sunnyside Christian started the game a little slower than the visitors in the opening stanza. Pomeroy led the game 16-6 at the end of the first quarter.

But it was the connections between the Knights offensive players that gave them the momentum they needed.

Sunnyside Christian took over in the second stanza and led the game 20-16 at halftime.

Knowing the Knights could continue leading the charge, the offense took to the field again and scored another 14 points in the third stanza, holding the Pirates to just one touchdown in the period.

The Pirates scored one more touchdown in the final quarter, but Sunnyside Christian's offense showed its mettle and another 12 points to secure the 42-28 victory.

Knights quarterback Wyatt Hoff led his team with four touchdown passes. He completed seven of nine passes for 194 yards through the air.

Brandon Broersma and Drew Puterbaugh each snagged a touchdown pass.

Luke Wavrin ran a touchdown into the end zone and completed two catches for a total of three touchdowns. He recorded 15 carries for 76 yards.

Teammate John Newhouse kept the Knights marching toward the goal line with 27 carries and 201 rushing yards. He also carried the ball into the end zone once.

"The team was focused," said Hernandez, stating he has had confidence in the Knights' ability throughout the season, but everything connected this past Saturday for a successful game.

This coming Friday Sunnyside Christian (2-3) is set to take on Liberty Christian in Richland.
