Sunnyside truck driver involved in fatal collision

YAKIMA - A 91-year-old Yakima man, Gordon E. Haines, died yesterday (Wednesday) just after 8 a.m. after he failed to yield the right of way to Israel L. Rodriguez, 53, of Sunnyside.

Haines, according to the Washington State Patrol, was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus southbound on 64th Avenue in Yakima. He drove the vehicle into the intersection at Ahtanum Road, failing to yield to Rodriguez's 2001 Peterbilt semi tractor and flatbed trailer. Rodriguez was traveling westbound on Ahtanum Road.

Haines' vehicle was struck and totaled as a result of the collision with the larger vehicle, according to troopers. He died at the scene.

Rodriguez was also injured and transported to Yakima Memorial Hospital.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
