ROYAL - Micki Williams scored a hat trick, including two goals in a five-minute span, to lead the Lady Viking soccer team to a 3-1 victory at Royal last night.
Williams tallied her first goal Tuesday night in the 26th minute of play on an assist from Maricela Chavez. The score proved to be the lone goal of the first half.
The Knights equalized the match in the 51st minute, about 10 minutes into the second half, and it looked like the 1-1 score might stand through the rest of regulation.
Mabton kept pushing, though, and it was Williams who eventually scored goals in the 80th and 85th minutes, just five minutes before the end of the match.
The deciding goal in the 80th minute came on an assist from Soila Zaragoza. Williams' third score was booted into the Royal net on a free kick.
"We tried to create more opportunities to score in the first half, to be more intentional with our offense," said Coach Elizabeth Garcia. "We had more opportunities to execute in the final minutes."
Not only did the Lady Vikes take opportunity to score last night, but on defense Mabton was downright stingy. Royal could only muster four shots on goal for the entire match against Mabton's defenders, while the Lady Vikes had eight shots on goal.
Mabton keeper Maryellen Gutierrez recorded three saves.
Garcia says a key to her team's success on defense last night was using the Royal field to its advantage.
"Royal has a very wide field, so we played back and could have space to recover on defense," Garcia said. "We adjusted to their field."
Mabton (3-3, 4-7) is at home tomorrow, Thursday, to play Kiona-Benton.
