Police chief and fire chief positions in Grandview no longer civil service posts

GRANDVIEW - The Grandview City Council last Tuesday approved an ordinance that excludes the police and fire chief positions from civil service.

At the council's Sept. 25 meeting the council discussed whether or not they wanted to require the police and fire chief positions to have residency requirements.

It was decided the council would prefer residency requirements, but a civil servant cannot be placed under such a requirement.

The city council, deciding the requirement is necessary, Tuesday enacted an ordinance that would exclude the two positions from civil service so that the residency requirement could be included when hiring a police or fire chief.

The police chief will be required to live within the city's urban growth area.

It was noted that the fire chief position was excluded from civil service in 2007 by a resolution. The new ordinance, said City Administrator Cus Arteaga, makes the resolution concrete.

The council approved the ordinances pertaining to the police and fire chief positions by a 6-0 vote.
