Sunnyside police rushed to Sunnyside Community Hospital last night (Monday) just after 9:30 p.m. after receiving a call from medical staff that they were treating a 3-year-old gunshot victim. The toddler was reportedly suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

Sgt. Joey Glossen said it is believed to have been the result of an accidental shooting that occurred in the area of Yakima Valley Highway and East Edison Avenue. A gun is believed to have been fired inside a vehicle the toddler was riding in.

Glossen said the incident is still under investigation.

According to police, the vehicle and gun were impounded as part of the investigation.

The toddler was treated at Sunnyside Community Hospital and was airlifted to Seattle. He is currently in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
