Teresa Mendez Garcia, 68, of Prosser passed away on Monday, October 22, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
Teresa was born Feb. 16, 1944 in Eagle Pass, Texas, the daughter of Herminia (Menchaca) and Hipolito Mendez.
Teresa lived and worked in California and Texas, raising her family before moving to Washington state.
On Oct. 27, 1978 she married Samuel Garcia in Sunnyside. They made their home in Grandview, until they moved to their ranch in Prosser in 2000.
In 1996 Teresa suffered a debilitating stroke, which did not slow her down, but caused her to retire from Child Protective Services. Despite her disability, her independent nature led her to continue to care for her grandchildren and volunteer for Catholic Family and Child Services-Senior Companion Program as a caregiver, transporting people to their various appointments.
She enjoyed family time, especially with her husband Samuel, and her granddaughters, Alexis and Shania, who often spent long stretches of time during the summer with their grandma, shopping, listening to country and Tejano music, watching football, especially the Seahawks, and the summers she and her family spent camping at Mt. Rainier National Park, Ohanapecosh.
Mom was the best mama anyone could have. She was always willing to help anyone in need. Mama will be greatly missed but we find comfort and peace in knowing that she is with our heavenly Father.
Teresa is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Samuel Garcia of Prosser; her children, Hector (Holly) Vela of Dayton, Yvonne (Mike) Seyler of Puyallup, Minnie (Jacob) Garcia of Richland; her grandchildren, Shannell Vela, Shase Vela, Alexis Seyler, Shania Seyler, Etiene Vela, Brightne Partlow, Matt Miller, Suri Vela and Eddy Storm Vela and Minnie's baby boy due in January; her brothers; Hipolito (Paula) Mendez, Rick Hernandez, Abel (Stacey) Mendez; her sister, Esther (James) Greene; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Herminia Mendez; her father, Hipolito Mendez; son, Edelmiro "Eddie" Vela; and sister, Magdalena "Maggie" Perez.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Toppenish. Celebration of life luncheon will be held at Iglesia El Calvario, 1810 Morgan Road in Sunnyside, immediately following the graveside service.
