Toddler remains in critical condition

A 3-year-old Sunnyside boy who suffers from an accidental gunshot wound to the face is still at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

Sunnyside police have been investigating the incident which took place this past Tuesday night near Yakima Valley Highway and East Edison Avenue.

Investigators believe the incident was a "terrible accident," resulting from the toddler finding his father's concealed handgun inside the family pick-up.

Sgt. Joey Glossen serves as one of the public information officers for the Sunnyside Police Department. He said it appears the child accidentally shot himself with his father's gun while inside the vehicle.

Two of the child's siblings were also inside the vehicle, but neither of them was wounded.

"Following the shooting, the boy's father rushed him to Sunnyside Community Hospital where he was treated and transported," said Glossen.

The father, he said, possesses a valid concealed weapons permit and has been cooperative with the investigation.

Glossen said the Washington State Crime Lab is assisting detectives with the investigation and processing the vehicle in which the accidental shooting occurred.

Also, Child Protective Services has been contacted and Glossen said the case will be forwarded to the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office for review once the investigation is completed.
