Bickleton's Clinton, Roberts qualify for State

ELLENSBURG - One single team point...that's what kept Bickleton from sending its entire team to the WIAA 1B/2B State Cross-Country Meet in Pasco this coming Saturday.

Instead, the Pirates will now be represented at State by just senior Peter Clinton and freshman Troy Roberts.

At last Friday's District 5/6 meet at Irene Rhineheart Park in Ellensburg, Bickleton finished third in the boys team standings with 56 points. Manson claimed runner-up honors with 55 points, while Liberty Bell claimed the District title with 26 points.

Only the top two finishing teams at District earned berths to State for their entire squads.

Despite coming up short team-wise, Bickleton Coach Chris Venema said he couldn't have asked for much more out of his runners.

"My boys left it all on the course and gave it all they had.

"We just came up a little short," Venema said.

Clinton and Roberts earned their State berths based on their individual finishes at District.

The senior Clinton placed third overall on the three-mile course. He sped to a clocking of 17:09. The only two harriers to best him were Liberty Bell junior Liam Daily, who clocked a time of 16:11; and Riverside Christian sophomore David Eisenhauer with a clocking of 16:48.

The underclassman Roberts hit the finish line in 17:29, good for sixth-place honors.

Just missing out on a 'Top 10' finish for Bickleton was freshman Kane Lowe. He placed 15th with a clocking of 18:16, just 31 seconds back of the 10th place finisher.
