Grandview man in intensive care following rollover

A Grandview man, Albert L. Leija, 27, is being treated for injuries sustained during a rollover accident that occurred just after 5 a.m. yesterday morning (Sunday) in the 1200 block of Midvale Road near Sunnyside.

Sunnyside police raced to the scene of the accident and found Leija's vehicle had rolled. Leija had been ejected from the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer he was driving and police found him lying on the ground approximately 30 feet from the vehicle.

Sunnyside police say Leija was rushed to Sunnyside Community Hospital and later transported to a Tri-Cities hospital, where he is listed in serious condition within the ICU.

Police believe Leija was traveling southbound on Midvale, traveling at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. They say his vehicle crossed the centerline, traveled across the oncoming lane of travel and left the roadway, striking a curb. When the vehicle hit the curb, the vehicle tumbled end over end three to four times before coming to a stop.

"Skid marks in the roadway were approximately 120-feet long before it hit the curb," said Sgt. Joey Glossen, public information officer for the Sunnyside Police Department.

He said Leija did not appear to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and police have sent blood samples to the Washington State crime lab for analysis to determine whether or not alcohol was a factor. A high rate of speed is believed to have also contributed to the accident.
