YAKIMA - The young Lady Viking team went on the road to play in the Yakima Valley SunDome Volleyball Festival last Friday, losing all matches but gaining experience.
"Although we played with enthusiasm and hustle it was tough trying to keep up with taller and more experienced teams," said Mabton Coach Crystal Garcia. "We had some good plays, but allowed the other teams to go on long runs. It was hard for us to get our momentum back on track."
Garcia said the team has no starting seniors.
"The bonus this year is we are a young team, said Garcia. "We have one junior, three sophomores and one freshman starting. Our starting libero is also a junior. So they will have a few more years of learning each other's playing style and seeing a lot of playing time together."
Despite the losses, the team showed off some strong skills. Alyssa Nash and Jesenia Meza led the team with 12 kills apiece. Naida Gusby strengthened the team with 35 assists. Angela Martinez kept the ball alive and moving with 32 digs and 20 perfect passes.
"Once we work on eliminating our errors and stop the long runs we will start seeing more success," said Garcia.
Mabton's next match is at Naches Valley tomorrow, Sept. 11.
