NACHES - The young Mabton volleyball team lost in three sets against Naches Valley yesterday, Tuesday, in a non-league match-up.
"(Our team) started out playing very well," said Lady Vikings Coach Crystal Garcia. "They were digging well and playing great as a team. It showed again we can compete but just need to keep the momentum on our side."
Mabton dropped the first set 25-13 after losing momentum. The Lady Knights lost both the second and third sets 25-8.
"Naches is a very powerful serving and hitting team. One of the best we've seen all year," said Garcia. "The girls tried their best with our defense coverage but we really need to work on reading the hitters a little bit better and adjust."
The Lady Vikings also suffered some player injuries toward the end of game two, requiring some players to play in different spots for the final set.
"They did well in adjusting to that situation," said Garcia.
Some bright spots for Mabton were Naida Gusby, who went 7-for-7 from the service line with two digs before having to leave the match due to injury.
Jessenia Meza rescued the ball with 10 digs and went 5-for-6 serving.
Angela Martinez also left the match due to injury, but managed 10 perfect passes and 14 digs before bowing out.
The Lady Vikings (0-2) play Granger tomorrow, Sept. 13, at home.
