MABTON - The Mabton Lady Viking soccer team scored early and late last night, Thursday, to come away with a 2-1 non-league victory at home over Granger.
Mabton wasted no time cracking the scoreboard on its way to its first victory of 2012, as Maricela Chavez scored on a long kick in the third minute. Lady Viking Coach Elizabeth Garcia said the opportunity came when the ball was loose at mid-field. Chavez gathered it in with her left foot and found the back of the net.
The score remained 1-0 in favour of Mabton until the 74th minute, just six minutes before the final whistle, when Micki Williams scored on a corner kick. The set piece started with Chavez crossing the ball into play near the Granger goal, with Williams getting a leg on it and knocking home the score.
Just when it looked like the match was iced, the Spartans found new life just a minute later on a set piece of their own. Granger took the kick close to the Mabton goal, then scored when a shot attempt ricocheted off Mabton keeper Maryellen Gutierrez's hand.
For the match, Mabton outshot Granger 7-4, with Gutierrez hustling for three saves to help keep the Lady Vikes in control.
Mabton's first win of the 2012 season was a much different result that last Saturday, when the Lady Vikes surrendered 12 goals to Highland in a non-league match.
"Defensively we talked about marking up players," Garcia said. "We're consistently working on that because the minute we let up the other team takes advantage."
Mabton (1-2) travels to Goldendale tomorrow, Saturday.
