BENTON CITY - Although several of the Sunnyside Little Grapplers' top performers this spring had previous commitments and were unable to join their teammates, the local youth wrestling club still brought home eight individual titles from a tournament in Benton City last Saturday.
"A few of our first-year kids really stepped it up," said Sunnyside Little Grapplers Coach Daniel Guillen.
Guillen said he's seeing first-hand how the local youngsters' confidence level is rising, "...not only in wrestling but in themselves overall. That's what it's all about," he said.
The eight individual titlists at Benton City representing the Sunnyside club included Rey Palomarez (5/6-year-olds); Joan Gonzalez (7/8-year-olds); Ignacio Payan (9/10-year-olds); Abraham Arreola, Rocky Rangel, Alfonso Ramos and Daniel Cardenas (11/12-year-olds); and Raul Macias (13/14-year-olds).
Sunnyside club members securing second-place honors in their respective weight and age divisions included Isaiah Macias and Marcos Velasquez (7/8-year-olds); and Riley Guerrero, Zakkery Garcia and Anthony Denson (9/10-year-olds).
Third-place trophy recipients for the Sunnyside Little Grapplers last Saturday were Jesse Denson (5/6-year-olds); Stephanie Blankenship and Nathan Davila (11/12-year-olds); and Myles Davila (13/14-year-olds).
The Sunnyside youth wrestling team is scheduled to compete at a tournament in Warden this coming Saturday, April 6.
