MABTON - The Lady Viking softball squad this past Saturday split a twin bill with Granger.
Mabton won the opener, 23-12. The Spartans, however, secured a 25-4 victory in the nightcap.
"The Mabton girls did a great job coming from behind in the first game when they were down by 11 in the second inning," said Lady Viking Coach Jesus Sustaita.
Granger scored three runs in the first inning and another eight base runners tagged home plate in the second inning.
The Mabton bats connected and resulted in 13 runs in the second inning, giving the Lady Vikes a 13-11 lead.
Mabton got another run in the third inning and nine Lady Vikes rounded the bases in the fifth inning.
The Spartans scored just one additional run in the fourth inning.
"The girls took advantage of the walks and capitalized with getting the key hits," Sustaita said of the Lady Vikings.
Sandra Gonzalez was 1-for-5 batting and had two RBIs, Cristina Gonzalez connected on three of four at bats for three RBIs, Adis Vizcaino had three RBIs and was 1-for-5 batting, Vanessa Sanchez was 1-for-2 at bat, had an RBI and walked three times, Cassidy McCallum was 1-for-2 batting, had three walks and was credited for two RBIs, and Risa Navarro had two RBIs, a walk and was 1-for-4 at the plate.
Navarro was on the mound for the opener. She had 8 Ks and walked 13 batters.
"In the second game, Granger capitalized on seven errors and had 13 hits to score 25 runs," said Sustaita.
He said the Lady Vikes struggled at the plate, connecting with the ball just four times.
Mabton took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, but Granger answered in the second inning with 10 runs.
The Lady Vikes scored another two runs in the third inning, but were shut down for the remaining two innings. On the flip side, the Spartans scored four runs in the third inning, six runs in the fourth and five in the final stanza.
McCallum and teammate Alex Hernandez each were credited for an RBI. McCallum, Hernandez and Navarro were 1-for-3 at the plate. Gonzalez connected for a hit, which was good for a home run and an RBI.
Mabton (1-3, 1-6-1) tomorrow (Tuesday) will travel to LaSalle.
