ROYAL CITY - Among the 22 teams present at the Ron Vanderhold Invitational track and field meet in Royal City last Friday afternoon, Mabton's Adrian Gutierrez earned first place honors in the javelin contest.
The Mabton High School senior threw a 140-6 toss, earning top honors in that event. He also earned fifth-place honors in the discus event with a 120-11 throw and a 12th-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.40.
Other bright spots for the Mabton boys included Jose Lopez's fifth-place effort in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 56.91. Lopez was also part of the foursome that notched a ninth-place finish in the 4x100 relay with a time of 50.59. Also part of the Mabton relay team were Isac Ochoa, Albert Sanchez and Austin Appling.
Mabton's Michael Jaramillo was also among the Viking competitors who notched a top-10 finish. Jarmillo earned seventh-place honors in the 800-meter dash with a 2:17.83 finish time.
The only other Mabton boys competitor who earned a top-10 finish was Alex Sagrero, who finished eighth in the discus event with a 113-7 throw.
Mabton's Noemi Gutierrez was the lone Lady Vike to earn top-10 finishes in events last Friday. She landed a 28-6 leap in the triple jump event for fifth-place honors, and a 13-6.75 leap in the long jump event for an eighth-place finish.
The Mabton High School track team is set to next host a SCAC East League Meet tomorrow, Tuesday, April 16.
