Another strong middle of pack finish for SHS boys

WENATCHEE - The Sunnyside High School boys golf team is holding its own this spring in Columbia Basin Big Nine League play.

Powered by Chandler Luther's 9-over-par 78 yesterday, the Grizzly linksters grinded out a fourth-place finish at the six-school conference match staged at Wenatchee's Three Lakes Golf Course.

Sunnyside is the lone Class 3A school in the predominantly 4A league. In the three CBBN matches held thus far this spring, the Grizzlies have finished fifth, third and now fourth. Two league matches remain - on Friday, April 26, at Yakima's Apple Tree Golf Resort, and on Monday, April 29, at the Moses Lake Country Club.

Brandon Cox, Monday's medalist with a 2-over-par 71, led Moses Lake to a first-place finish at the par-69 Wenatchee course. The Chiefs tallied a team score of 309.

Eastmont and Wenatchee tied for second-place honors yesterday with identical team scores of 337. Sunnyside placed fourth with an aggregate total of 357 strokes, with Eisenhower and Davis bringing up the rear.

In leading the Grizzlies on the 5,378-yard Wenatchee course yesterday, Luther fired a 40 on the front nine. He shaved two strokes off that total after the clubhouse turn, carding a 38.

SHS Coach Gary Rohde indicated Luther was on top of his game Monday. Rohde said Luther parred half the holes, but the senior's highlight for the day came on No. 15, a par-4, 267-yard hole.

"Chandler almost drove the green," said Rohde. "He hit a nice chip shot, then made his putt for the birdie."

Ian Heffron was second in for the Grizzlies. He went 41-45 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a round of 86.

Heffron, too, snared a tweeter Monday. His bird came on the par-3 second hole, which plays about 150 yards.

Nathan Meyer (51-45 - 96) and Brandon Daley (52-45 - 97) rounded out the team scoring for Sunnyside.

Also competing for the Grizzlies was Eli Romero, although his 18-hole round of 121 wasn't applied to the team total.

The SHS boys now have about a week and a half to fine tune their games in preparation for their next league match on April 26 at Apple Tree.
