Police pursuit ends with vehicle in S'side canal

Alejandro Roldan-Mendez, 32, spent the night in jail Monday night after attempting to outrun Sunnyside police. Reaching speeds upward of 60 mph, in a 25 mph zone, Mendez lost control of his vehicle on Harrison Hill, with the rig ending up in the canal.

Reportedly, he had been detained on a routine traffic stop when he chose to elude the officer.

Roldan-Mendez was arrested on an eluding charge, after Sunnyside officers rescued him from his car which landed in the Sunnyside canal. The officer at the scene had to break a window in order to pull Roldan-Mendez from the car, according to Sunnyside Police Department information Officer Sgt. Joey Glossen.

A local towing company was called to pull the vehicle from the canal.
