Bickleton shines at Bowerman invite

CONDON, ORE. - Named for a famed University of Oregon track coach, last Saturday's Bill Bowerman Invitational at Condon, Ore. saw several stand-out performances by Bickleton track and field athletes.

The Lady Pirates were paced by Lindsay Brown, with a first-place mark of 4-8 in the high jump.

Brown was also on the Bickleton 4x100 relay team that earned first-place honors by breaking the tape at 55.31. Shaylee Tharp, Jamie Venema and Haley Goodnight also made up the first-place foursome.

Brown earned second-place honors in the 100 meter hurdles with a clocking of 17.30, bested only by Condon's Courtney MacInnes at 16.95. The Bickleton sophomore in addition was runner-up in the 100 meters at 13.37. That event was won by Condon's Ellie Logan in 12.72.

Venema had an outstanding day for Bickleton with second-place honors in the 200 meters and third-place finishes in the triple jump and pole vault.

In the 200 meters, the senior's time of 28.47 was bested only by Lyle Wishram's Jacqueline Diendorfer at 28.12.

Venema's third-place mark in the triple jump was 29-2.25. She recorded a leap of eight feet even in the pole vault.

Rounding out the Lady Pirates top-4 finishes Saturday were Haley Goodnight (fourth in the discus at 76-10) and Tharp (fourth in the long jump at 12-8).

Peter Clinton sparked the Bickleton boys by winning the triple jump with a first-place leap of 39-11, six inches better than runner-up Isaac Messenger of Goldendale.

Clinton, a senior, had three other top-4 finishes on Saturday. He earned second-place honors in the pole vault at 11-6, bested only by Condon's Trevor Thomas at 13 feet. Clinton also cruised to a third-place finish in the 200 meters (24.62) and fourth-place honors in the 100 meters at 11.80.

The Pirates' top-4 finishers also included a quartet of third-place honors; Michael Underwood (2:25.93 in the 800 meters), Troy Roberts (11:24.61 in the 3,000 meters), Nathan Powers (17.81 in the 110-meter hurdles) and Taylor Brown (45.91 in the 300-meter hurdles).

There were no team scores reported from the Bowerman invite.

This coming Friday the Bickleton track teams will be back in action when they travel to the Jeff Agar Memorial Track Meet in Glenwood.
