Gutierrez duo only Vikes with 'Top 5' finishes at 15-school invitational

MATTAWA - Senior Adrian Gutierrez and freshman Noemi Gutierrez, both representing Mabton High School, each earned a pair of 'Top 5' finishes at the Wahluke Windbreaker Track & Field Invite last Friday.

Hosted by Wahluke High School, the invitational drew a 15-school field.

Zillah - getting victories from freshman Riley Olney (200), sophomores Diego Hernandez (400) and Ruben Perez (discus), as well as from its 4x400 relay squad - edged Riverside Christian by two points to claim top honors in the boys team scoring.

The Lady Leopards received a two-victory performance from freshman Alexis Redfield (800 and 1600) in easily walking off with the girls team title last Friday. Zillah piled up 144 points, with Quincy's girls a distant second with 88 points. Besides Redfield's two wins, the Zillah girls team also got victories from junior Emily Seaman (high jump), senior Beth Wise (100m hurdles) and from its 4x400 relay squad.

Mabton's girls placed 14th in the team scoring. Gutierrez, the freshman, notched the highest individual finishes for the Lady Vikes, placing fifth in both the triple jump and 300m hurdles.

In the triple jump Gutierrez recorded a leap of 30-5, four feet, 11 inches back of the top effort on the day. In the girls 300m hurdles the Mabton freshman hit the tape in 54.38 seconds. The winning time, set by Quincy freshman Samantha Kleyn, was 49.14.

For the Mabton boys, Gutierrez - the senior - was third in both the discus and javelin. His best throw with the platter was 124-7, approximately 16 feet behind the winning discus toss. Gutierrez recorded an effort of 140-11 in the javelin, 13 and a half feet short of the top throw on the day, that belonging to Kolton Cobb of Columbia-Burbank.

Mabton's boys, in placing 12th in the team scoring from the 15-school field, also received a sixth-place performance from sophomore Emiliano Rodriguez in the long jump. He notched an effort of 18-6, exactly two feet back of the winning 20-6 jump set by Riverside Christian junior Kirk Gartrell.
