Miss Sunnyside candidate Leah Diddens

Being named Miss Sunnyside will allow Leah Diddens to achieve one of her dreams...getting to represent the community. The 2013-14 Miss Sunnyside candidate is the daughter of Kris and Mark Diddens and has a younger brother. Diddens said she has attended the Miss Sunnyside Pageant in the past, seeing contestants who represent themselves and the community well. "The candidates are a good example of the community...they represent positive changes in Sunnyside," said Diddens. If she is selected to serve as Miss Sunnyside, she said for her community service project she would like to work with the Loving Sunnyside Initiative. She would like to be a part of an effort to help the community and its residents. "I'd like to help select the residents chosen for the (home improvement) projects that are completed by volunteers," said Diddens. She said she and the court would also volunteer to recruit additional volunteers in an effort to spruce up homes in various neighborhoods throughout Sunnyside. "We would also share in the effort of painting and doing some of the repairs," Diddens said. The aspiring Miss Sunnyside firmly believes in serving others. She wants to earn a degree as a school psychologist or special education teacher. "During the school year I volunteered to help in a special education class, and I enjoyed the experience," said Diddens. She said she liked the connections she made with the staff and students. She also liked feeling she was making a difference for the students with special needs. Believing any member of the Miss Sunnyside court should lead by example, Diddens said she wants to extend those connections. She said that is an important aspect of serving as Miss Sunnyside. "Miss Sunnyside is responsible for showing others the positive aspects of the community...she has an opportunity to be an example of today's youth," said Diddens, stating Miss Sunnyside can be an example of responsibility and pride in the community. The 2013-14 Miss Sunnyside Pageant will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the Sunnyside High School auditorium.
