Port to try again for grant funds

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That's what the Port of Sunnyside is doing after it learned that a grant application for its wastewater plant expansion was denied. Last night, Monday, port commissioners reviewed a letter from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce denying the $1.5 million grant application. The port wants to install an anaerobic system to double capacity of its industrial wastewater plant. It's estimated the expansion will bring at least 25 new jobs to Sunnyside. The port already has $4.5 million in hand for the anaerobic project that's estimated to cost $6 million. The port's property development and project manager, Jed Crowther, said last night there are already plans in the works to pursue grant funds from other agencies. "There are some good prospects," he said.
