Fundraiser planned for 'Cowboy'

A fundraiser to help Frank "Cowboy" Mendez, a Sunnyside School District bus driver, will be held at the Sunnyside Eagles Aerie lodge this coming Friday, Aug. 9. Mendez was recently diagnosed with blood cancer, according to Elena Duran. She said family and friends will be hosting a Mexican dinner and dance to help pay for Mendez's expenses while he seeks treatment at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. "He needs an apartment while he is there," said Duran, stating Mendez's treatment is expected to last through November. Dinner will be served from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday. Organizers said a $10 donation per plate will be accepted, "...but every little bit will help." A free dance will follow the meal. Anyone unable to attend the dinner and dance can contact Duran at 830-4350 if they wish to donate funds to help Mendez.
