Welfare check results in delivery of baby

Sunnyside police found what they thought was a routine welfare check request to be anything but routine this past Saturday night.

According to the Sunnyside police log, officers were called to the 500 block of Yakima Valley Highway after 10:30 p.m., arriving in time to hear a woman in the final stages of delivering her baby.

The baby appeared to be breathing okay and seemed healthy, according to the report.

The mother and baby, not identified, were transported to the Sunnyside Community Hospital emergency room, where mother and child were examined.

In other weekend police activity, officers investigated 11 suspicious circumstances and checked out five business and four residential automatic alarms, all of which proved to be unfounded. Police also handled five animal complaints, made two attempts to locate individuals, made three arrests on charges of driving while under the influence and handled three juvenile problems.

Officers also dealt with 10 traffic situations, two trespassing complaints, and made one arrest for violation of a no-contact order.

Sunnyside police also provided six citizen assists, took three informational calls and three welfare checks during the past weekend.
