Sunnyside schools leading the way in meeting common core standards

Schools throughout the state of Washington are trying to find a way to meet common core state standards, and Sunnyside is leading the way with the adoption of its new curriculum.

Earlier this year, the district’s executive director of curriculum, Brian Hart, introduced a series of books that meet the criteria for the standards being adopted.

Those books, he said, also meet standards for core history, social studies and science, as well as technical subjects.

Adopting Collect, Interpret, Apply (CIA) reading materials, say developers of the curriculum, raises the complexity of the level of learning.

Beginning this school year, students in third through sixth grades in the Sunnyside schools will be reading the materials included in the CIA curriculum.

The books include autobiographies of famous people and stories of historical exploration. It is the first time the Sunnyside School District has changed its reading curriculum in 10 years.

“These materials will allow our teachers to engage students in reading materials and strategies that will lead to greater comprehension,” said Hart.

This month educators will receive training on the new curriculum and literacy coaches will be available throughout the 2013-14 school year.

All school districts must have the common core state standards in place by the 2014-15 school year, and Sunnyside School District officials are pleased to be leading the way.

Pioneer Elementary School literacy coach Kelly Wavrin said, “Both teachers and students are much more excited about reading due to their growing confidence and comprehension…we know we are on to something good when children apply what they have learned in class to their own personal reading choices.”

The CIA reading materials were reviewed this past spring and the Sunnyside School Board approved the curriculum that will be implemented beginning this year.
