MABTON – With only two of four members present, the Mabton City Council had to cancel a special budget meeting last night due to lack of a quorum.
Monday night’s session was a continuation of a city council meeting held last Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The purpose of continuing the meeting to last night was review and passage of final budget figures for 2014.
However, councilwoman Sophie Sotelo notified Mabton City Hall yesterday that she would be out of town last night and unavailable for the meeting. Mayor pro tem Oping Hutson was not at the meeting and did not call the city ahead of time or provide a reason for her absence.
Mabton is down to four council members following Mario Martinez’s election to mayor. He took office last week, leaving his Pos. 4 seat vacant. Mabton will seek a replacement to that post and hopes to have it filled next month.
Last night, though, there were more Mabton city staff members on hand for the meeting, three, than there were council members.
The councilmen who made it to last night’s meeting, Arturo De La Fuente and Mark Gourneau, agreed with Martinez to continue the budget talks for a third time to tomorrow, Wednesday, at 5 p.m.
It’s anticipated the Mabton City Council will take action tomorrow night, in what will be the city’s sixth meeting to review the 2014 budget.
