Bonifacio “Barney” Alanis, 87, a longtime Mabton resident went to be in the arms of his loving Savior on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, from his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Barney was born May 29, 1926 in Miguel Aleman Tamp., Mexico, the son of Casimiro and Aniceta (Trevino) Alanis.

Barney received his education in Mexico.

In March of 1945 he met the love of his life, Julia Valdez, and they were married on Dec. 19, 1945 in Ochoa Tamp., Mexico. They together made their home in Mabton, where they raised 10 children.

Barney worked in the construction of the dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. From 1969 to 1973 the Alanis family made their home in Lewiston, Idaho, where Barney continued working in the construction of dams.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mabton, and also a member of Local Union #348 in Pasco. Barney was a carpenter at heart, building his own home and making cabinets for family members. He was a jack of all trades and a helping hand to anyone.

Barney is survived by nine children; Jane (Nati) Saenz of Grandview, Barney (Arlene) Alanis of Tacoma, Ortencia (Ben) Alvarez of Royse City, Texas, Anna (Kerry) Desmarais of Sunnyside, Frances Gama of Union Gap, Sylvia Moctezuma of Sunnyside, Leonard (Suzie) Alanis of Kennewick, Julie (Lorenzo) Duran of McMinnville, Ore., and Eddie Alanis of Mabton; 32 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; five siblings, Elias Alanis of Roma, Texas, Bertha Leza of McAllen, Texas, Raquel Alanis of Houston, Texas, Ninfa Ruiz of Monterrey, Mexico and Elva Salinas of Reynosa, Mexico; and last but not least, his canine companion, Milagro.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Julia; daughter, Elizabeth Angeles; four grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers.

Viewing and visitation will be held today, Dec. 4, 2013, from 3 to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Holy Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Mabton Cemetery.
