YAKIMA – Two of Mabton’s seven wrestlers posted third place finishes at the Mel Carlson Invite this past Saturday in West Valley.
Freshman Fernando Cas-tellanos earned third place honors in the 113-lb. weight class after twice defeating West Valley’s Trevor Burns. The Viking pinned Burns in the opening match and in the third/fourth place match. Castellanos was defeated in his second match, but didn’t let that deter him in the final match. He ended the match for third/fourth place, pinning Burns in just 22 seconds.
The other third place finisher for Mabton was junior Emiliano Rodriguez (132 lbs.). He was 3-1 on the day, winning the third/fourth place match by pinning Makeep Shergill of Hanford in 1:48.
Also making it into the match for third/fourth place honors was Mabton freshman Gabriel Mireles. In the 120-lb. weight class he was 1-2 and lost the final match to earn fourth place honors after being pinned in 54 seconds.
The Lady Vikings were not competing for medals, but showed up with two fearsome competitors.
“We matched the girls up with some competitors from Toppenish,” said Mabton Coach John Kilian.
Jesenia Meza of Mabton (137 lbs.) pinned two Wildcats, Kally Evans and Lorena Gomez, in 1:22 and 1:20, respectively.
Meza is the only senior competing for Mabton this season and Kilian was pleased to see her perform well this past Saturday.
In the 112-lb. weight classification, Noemi Gutierrez of the Lady Vikes had just one match. She pinned Toppenish’s Claudia Torres in 2:50.
“We have a young team…we have a lot to improve upon,” said Kilian, adding he was encouraged by the performances of the grapplers that competed at the invitational.
“We might be young, but that is encouraging for the future…I know there is potential as they gain experience,” he said.
Mabton this coming Thursday will compete in a double dual involving Ki-Be, Naches and Highland at Highland High School.
