Local café asking customers to help with feeding the needy

Sunnyside’s Green Olive Café, 2926 Covey Lane, is asking its customers to dine and donate food items during the month of December. Non-perishable food items are being collected as a part of its third annual food drive.

“We are collecting non-perishable food items for those in our community who need a little extra help during the winter season,” said Heather Booth, a spokesperson for the event.

Booth said customers who bring in a minimum of two items will have a chance to draw from Green Olive’s Christmas box that contains prizes such as a $10 gift card, $5 gift card, free dessert or free appetizers.

“Last year Green Olive was able to collect 482 non-perishable food items,” Booth said.

“We hope to beat last year’s number and help many more families in the Sunnyside area,” she added.

Booth said the goal is to help many families through the food drive, “….but we will consider our food drive a success if we are able to help one family in need.”

All items collected at Green Olive Café will be taken to local food banks to distribute to those families in need in the Sunnyside community.

She suggested customers donated any of the following food items: canned foods (soup, beans, fruits, vegetables, meats and peanut butter), dried foods (cereal, oatmeal, crackers, granola bars, rice, pasta, fruit and beans) and bottled juices.
