BENTON CITY – The Mabton girls basketball team last night traveled to Ki-Be High School, defeating the Bears 60-44.
“I was really pleased with the (Mabton) girls’ effort,” said Lady Vikings Coach Chris McCallum.
He said the Lady Vikes had a slow start, outscoring the home team by just one point in the first stanza and allowing Ki-Be to take the lead (23-22) before the intermission.
“Every time we were about to break the game open in the first half, (Ki-Be) would hit a big shot,” said McCallum
However, Mabton settled in, hitting its stride in the third quarter. The Lady Vikings held the Bears to just six points, while scoring 20 points of their own to take a 42-28 lead.
“We got hot from behind the 3-point line…we hit four (treys) in a row…all from different girls,” McCallum said of the action during the third quarter.
Mabton’s Alyssa Nash and Desanay Guerrero each had a double-double. Nash was the leading scorer with 14 points, eight of which were made from the field. She recorded 10 rebounds. Guerrero tallied 13 points, five of which were from the charity stripe. She also had 10 boards.
Nash also contributed to the final tally, providing six assists.
Teammate Irene Pineda contributed another 13 points. She, Cassidy McCallum and Christina Espinoza each made two 3-point shots.
The leading scorer for Ki-Be was Abby Pendergast with 13 points to her credit.
“This was really a great team win,” said McCallum, stating the Lady Vikings worked as a cohesive unit to defeat the Bears.
Mabton will this coming Friday host Riverview and will travel to Sunnyside Christian High School the following night.
