EVERSON - The Sunnyside High School girls wrestling team this past Saturday claimed top team honors at the Nooksack Valley Invite.
The Lady Grizzlies had four champions at the invite, including Daisy Chavez, Megan Casseday, Kayla Gonzalez and Jessica Cardenas.
Chavez took home top honors for Sunnyside in the 124-lb. weight class, having won two bouts.
Casseday earned championship honors in the 145-lb. weight class, defeating three opponents.
Gonzalez defeated two competitors for championship honors in the 112-lb. classification.
Cardenas, third place medalist at State last season in the 170-lb. weight class, moved up to the 190-lb. classification and defeated two opponents on Saturday.
SHS Coach Terry Shines said there were a total of 14 Lady Grizzlies on the mat, all of whom placed.
Third place honors were earned by Brittnee Alaniz (100 lbs.), Justina Borjas at 137 lbs., Amanda Bazan (155 lbs.), 170-pounder Monique Gill and Cassidy Ochoa at 235 lbs.
Eneira Alcaide (118 lbs.) earned fourth place honors for the Lady Grizzlies, and fifth place honors were earned by Adriana Chavez (112 lbs.), Geniya Guillen at 124 lbs. and 137-pounder Ruby Ochoa. Teammate Jasmine Starke earned sixth place honors in the 235-lb. weight class.
“The Sunnyside girls did very, very well,” said Shines.
The SHS girls wrestling team will tomorrow (Thursday) host Eisenhower.
