Mabton grapplers fall to both Highland, Naches

COWICHE – Both Naches and Highland defeated Mabton in a double-dual meet held at Highland High School last night.

The Vikings won two matches against Naches, but the Rangers won two of three victories by pin on the way to a 40-21 victory.

“Forfeits are painful,” said Mabton Coach John Kilian.

There were a total of six forfeits, four of which provided Naches with 24 points.

Viking Sergio Lupercio was the first to garner points for his team. The 106-pounder won a 12-7 decision over Bailey Haller.

The other Mabton grappler to secure a victory was Emiliano Rodriguez. He pinned Daniel Perez of Naches in 2:13 in the 132-lb. bout.

The Rangers got the upper-hand in the 113-lb. match. Austin Simmons of Naches won a 13-5 decision over Viking Fernando Castellanos.

Mabton’s Rudy Ramirez (170 lbs.) was pinned by Sean Casey of the Rangers in 1:33, and teammate Salvador Urbina lost by pin in 2:23 to Naches’ Gavin Brumley in the 285 weight class.

Highland garnered 18 points by forfeit, securing a 36-23 win for the Scotties.

Emilio Rodriguez of Mabton moved up a weight class to 138 lbs. and won by technical fall over Miguel Negrete of Highland (15-0).

Salvador Urbina dropped down a weight class to wrestle Nate Townsend of Highland in the 220-lb. bout. The Viking prevailed by pin in 2:53.

At 113 lbs., Castellanos was pinned by David Peterson of the Scotties in 3:31, teammate Gabriel Morales (120 lbs.) was pinned by Highland’s Juan Pablo Salcedo in 1:43 and Ramirez lost the 170-lb. bout by pin to Jesus DeSantos in 3:48.

Just one Lady Viking competed in the double-dual.

At 112-lbs., Noemi Gutierrez pinned Ki-Be’s Maria Mondragon in 2:51 and Highland’s Kacie Churchill in 1:56.

The Mabton boys will tomorrow (Saturday) compete at Granger’s Iron Man Invite, and the girls will travel to a tournament in Connell.
