5-year-old struck by gunfire

A Sunnyside 5-year-old boy was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle late Tuesday night after suffering a gunshot wound to his lower body.

The child was injured in what Sunnyside police are saying may be a gang-related incident.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Sunnyside police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 1100 block of South First Street, according to a statement released this morning by Sunnyside Police Sgt Joey Glossen.

While en route to the area officers received information there was a young child in one of the homes who had been shot. Upon arrival officers located a 5-year-old child, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the lower body.

Glossen said the scene was secured and the victim was transported to the local hospital, where he was stabilized and eventually transported to Harborview Medical Center.

According to the child’s family members, the youngster underwent more than five hours of surgery and seems to be doing well this morning.

Glossen said records show that Sunnyside police have responded to numerous gang related incidents at this residence in the past.

“Patrol officers, detectives and the Sunnyside gang unit worked late into the night with the assistance of surrounding agencies and the Washington State Department of Corrections following leads in this case,” Glossen said.

“The case is currently under investigation and we are not in the position to release any suspect information at this time,” he added.

Glossen said Sunnyside police detectives, along with the gang unit, will continue to work this case. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Sunnyside Police Department, 836-6211.
