Mabton boosters plan fundraiser for homicide victim this coming Saturday

MABTON – The basketball booster club will be honoring former Mabton basketball player Carmen Johnson at the Mabton High School basketball game this coming Saturday.

Johnson, 20, was killed last Sunday morning, shot while at a party near Grandview.

The booster club will be selling t-shirts with his picture for $15 each and also will be sponsoring the game’s taco feed and a bake sale. All proceeds will go to Johnson’s family.

A tribute to Johnson will be held on the basketball court immediately following the girls varsity game and prior to the boys varsity warm-ups, approximately 7:15 p.m. if the games are running on time.

Funeral services for Johnson will be held Monday, Dec. 23.

A viewing and rosary will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnnyside.

A mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the Grandview Catholic Church, followed by the burial at Mabton Cemetery. A potluck will be held after the burial at the Grandview Catholic Church.
