OTHELLO – Jesenia Meza of Mabton earned the 137-lb. championship for girls at yesterday’s Othello wrestling invitational.
She pinned Ruby Ochoa of Sunnyside in 3:40 in the first round of action. That victory provided Meza the opportunity to compete in the finals against Mariah DeLeon of Othello. The Mabton grappler pinned the Husky in 25 seconds for the title.
Mabton Coach John Kilian was pleased with Meza’s performance. “She looked really good…she used a new takedown move the team has been learning, twice,” he said.
“Jesenia had a great day.”
Kilian said there were just five competitors in Meza’s weight class, whereas some other weight classifications were “stacked.”
Two other girls competed for the Lady Vikings, Cassandra Moreno (106 lbs.) and Noemi Gutierrez (118 lbs.). Both lost two matches. Gutierrez, said Kilian, had to move up a weight classification.
“She learned the importance of making weight,” said the coach.
For the Mabton JV boys it was Rudy Ramirez at 170 lbs. and 220-pounder Salvador Urbina who competed in Othello.
Ramirez won his first match over Andy Vasquez of Quincy by a 7-2 decision, but the Viking faltered in his second bout. He lost by pin in 45 seconds to Iche Ramirez of Quincy.
Urbina lost both of his matches.
Kilian said he was pleased to see the two Vikings execute some of the moves they have been practicing. “It was nice to know they have been listening.”
Mabton returns to the mat on Thursday, Jan. 9, when Ki-Be visits the Viking gym.
