YAKIMA - Grandview advanced eight grapplers to next Saturday's 2A Regional wrestling tournament as a result of this past Friday and Saturday's District 5/6 tourney at West Valley High School.
Two Greyhounds earned championship honors at the District tournament, helping their team earn fifth place honors.
Grandview junior Fidel Medina, at 106 lbs., bested No. 2 State-ranked Isaiah Barrera of Othello by a 17-6 decision in the semi-finals. That put the Greyhound in the championship bout, where he defeated No. 1 State-ranked Anthony Berrerra, also of Othello. Medina battled the Husky through regulation to come out on the winning end, 2-1, in overtime.
"Fidel just keeps getting better and better as he continues to get himself back into wrestling shape after missing most of the season," said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny.
Joesiah Saunders, too, impressed the coach after returning to the mat from an absence due to a case of influenza.
Saunders, said Sevigny, didn't appear to have allowed the illness to weaken him any. The Greyhound took to the mat and scored three consecutive pins before earning a spot in the 132-lb. final match against teammate Stevie Rodriguez.
"Stevie had his best day of wrestling all season and made it to the finals, where he had to face teammate Joesiah Saunders," said Sevigny.
The match was tight and Rodriguez trailed Saunders 1-0 in the final period. Saunders scored an escape to start the period and took a 2-0 lead. Late in the match, it was Saunders who took control again. He caught Rodriguez off-balance and notched a pin with just 15 seconds on the clock.
Besides Rodriguez, also earning runner-up honors at the District tournament were Grandview's David Castaneda (126 lbs.) and 138-pounder Jaron Raymond.
Castaneda was unable to match the defensive style of his opponent, Lucas Garza, in the finals. Sevigny said Garza's style slowed the typically quick Castaneda.
"He (Castaneda) wasn't able to get in on any real good shots until late in the match...at that point Garza was just trying to hang on for the win," said Sevigny.
As a result, Garza earned a 5-3 decision over the Greyhound.
Raymond was the third seed for his weight class. He scored two pins before making it to the finals, including a fall against No. 2 seed Allyn Burvee of Ellensburg in the semi-finals.
It was Toppenish's Brent Evans who ended Raymond's day in the title bout. Evans subdued Raymond via a pin in the second period for the championship title.
Grandview's Jose Castilleja (138 lbs.) and Alex Soberanes (145 lbs.) earned fifth place honors at Districts, and teammate A.J. Valenzuela earned sixth place honors in 170-lb. action. The trio qualified for Regionals as a result of their performances.
The 2A Regional tournament will be hosted by Ellensburg High School this coming Saturday.
