Base judgments on facts, not your emotions and heresay

I am writing this letter to show support for Sunnyside's interim city manager, Frank Sweet. I do not envy this man the position he holds and the decisions that he has to make, whether I agree with his decisions or not.

Mr. Sweet has opened himself to substantial community criticisms with his most recent decision regarding Deputy Police Chief Phil Schenck. I believe a fair amount of this criticism will be based on emotion rather than common business sense. Just because someone may be a "good person" or "nice person" doesn't necessarily make them the best person for a particular job or position. This not only applies in public service, but also in private business.

I would challenge anyone in the community to read through and study the Police Department Performance and Management Review (MGT Report) made available last summer. This is an unbiased audit and should be of great concern to community members. I believe Mr. Sweet is taking the information from this audit and making some well thought-out decisions regarding concerns revealed in this audit. These are business decisions that will impact the city of Sunnyside now and in the future and are not based on personalities, opinions or who is friends with whom.

If you have concerns as a citizen, get involved. Base your judgments on facts, not hearsay or emotions.

Mr. Sweet, I applaud you for having the backbone to make difficult decisions knowing they won't always be welcome decisions. Hang in there!

/s/ Gena Hall, Sunnyside
