Gutierrez to make fourth appearance at State

CONNELL - After earning runner-up honors at the Regional V wrestling tournament in Connell this past weekend, Mabton's Mary Gutierrez will get to compete at State for the fourth year in a row.

The Lady Viking this past weekend earned a unique spot in the Mabton record books as the third Viking to qualify for State all four years.

She pinned Elisa Garza of Othello in 1:28, subdued Juliana Valenciano of Othello by pin in 3:44 and in the 112-lb. title bout lost a 6-2 decision to Grandview's Viannei Perez.

Mabton Coach John Kilian is proud of how well Gutierrez has performed throughout the season. She earned fourth-place honors at Mat Classic XXIV and he expects Gutierrez will do well again this year.

"She's an elite athlete," said Kilian.

Gutierrez will take to the mat against Tori Barnes of Sedro Woolley at 10:32 a.m. in Tacoma this coming Friday.

Also earning a spot at State after securing third-place honors at Regionals is Lady Viking Jazmin Mendoza (124 lbs.).

She pinned Wahluke's Fatima Romero in 42 seconds, was subdued by Tatum Sparks of Othello by pin in 2:58, pinned Victoria Carillo of Quincy in 4:05 and defeated Connell's Martha Corona by a 7-6 decision in the consolation finals for third-place honors.

Mendoza has made one other appearance at State, in 2011. She earned eighth-place honors that year and Kilian has hopes the senior will fare better this year.

She will compete this coming Friday at 11:12 a.m. against Sara Sanchez of Washougal.

Mabton's Jesenia Meza (130 lbs.) earned an alternate's spot to State after securing fourth-place honors at Regionals.

Her opening bout was against Phelicia Perez of Othello. Meza defeated the Husky by a 10-3 decision, but lost the second round of action to Sunnyside's Abigail Elizondo by a 13-7 decision.

Meza moved into the consolation bracket and defeated Haieley Hall of Pasco by a 7-4 decision. In the consolation finals, Sydney Virgen of Pasco defeated the Lady Viking by pin in 2:05.

Kilian said the Mabton girls have had a good season so far and he is pleased to have a few grapplers competing in the Tacoma Dome this coming weekend.

"It'll be interesting," he said.
