West Valley clips 'Hounds in District semi-final contest

YAKIMA - West Valley's Rams made it 3-for-3 against the Grandview boys basketball team this season with last night's 51-46 victory over the Greyhounds.

Thursday evening's loss by Grandview came in the CWAC District tournament semi-final game.

The defeat sends the 'Hounds (14-8) into a consolation round match-up against the Wapato Wolves. That game is slated for this coming Saturday at Sunnyside High School, beginning at 5 p.m.

In their two previous CWAC league games this season, West Valley prevailed by 63-48 and 76-68 margins against the Greyhounds. Last night's contest was much closer, but Grandview had to rally with a 23-14 run in the final quarter to cut the final deficit to just five points.

Neither club could get much of anything going early on, as together the two teams totaled just 11 points in the opening period. The Rams outscored Grandview 12-8 in the second quarter to take a slim 18-13 lead into the locker room at intermission.

West Valley, behind Tyler Cluff's game-high 21-point performance, exploded big time after the half, though. The Rams nearly doubled Grandview's scoring output in the third period, piecing together a 19-10 scoring spurt.

Isaiah Gonzalez, Bryce Carpenter and Isaiah Ruiz - with 13, 13 and 12 points, respectively - attempted to lead the 'Hounds to a comeback in the final stanza, but just came up short.

Team-wise, Grandview shot at a 40 percent clip from the field, netting 19-of-47 field goal attempts. The GHS boys were 5-of-11 from the free throw line.

West Valley made 19-of-54 shots from the floor, which included knocking down 4-of-19 from treyland. The Rams were 9-of-17 from the foul line.

The Rams forced Grandview into committing 18 turnovers, while only coughing up the ball 11 times, themselves.

On the boards it was nearly a wash, as West Valley came away with 36 rebounds and Grandview had 33. The Rams' top rebounder was Austin Strock with 13 loose balls gathered in. He also canned 14 points in the game. Grandview was led on the boards by Andy Rodriguez with nine rebounds, who also chipped in 6 points.
