Police chief search hits snag

It's almost back to square one for the city of Sunnyside's search for a new police chief after one of the two finalists pulled his name from consideration.

The selection had been narrowed down to two candidates before the holidays with help from Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin and Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg. Interim City Manager Frank Sweet said he made the decision to wait until after the holidays to finish the process.

Unfortunately for the city, one of the top two candidates accepted a job in Florida over the holidays. Sweet said the final interview process needs to include two candidates.

As a result, the pool of candidates has been reopened until the end of January, at which point the winnowing process will again narrow the candidates to two.

"The other applicant is still being considered," said Sweet.
