I was disappointed to hear the Grandview School Board voted against school uniforms for Grandview Middle School. I believe they chose not to look thoroughly at the issue.
Concerns about encouraging conformity are not valid. What do you think kids do now? They conform. Unfortunately, they are conforming to gang attire, $200 athletic shoes. hoodie sweatshirts, basketball shorts and stocking caps. Drive by the school and you'll witness it all, including young women dressed like prostitutes.
All one has to do is look at schools or other groups requiring a standard form of dress or uniform. Discipline is better. Behavior is better. Performance is better. Pride in identity with the school and community is better.
It is also much less expensive for parents to clothe their children for school since they don't have to keep up with all the expensive fads for day-to-day wear. And, all you have to do is look at the experience of Compass High School.
As a long time leader in Boy Scouts, I can attest that all of the positive points are true. We require our Scouts to be in uniform when we travel so they properly represent their troop, community and family. They are better behaved. They do perform better. They do exhibit pride in their community and troop. Almost all the time, they are also treated better than other youth who may be in the same location at the same time, such as getting free food and other perks.
I sincerely believe the school board needs to reconsider this action and approve uniforms for the middle school as well as looking at similar requirements for other schools.
