Marilyn Weinbender, 68, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Yakima.

Marilyn Kay Van Atta was born Nov. 4, 1944 in Vancouver to Frank and Margaret Van Atta. She graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1962.

She married Jerry Weinbender in 1963. Marilyn and Jerry lived in Sunnyside and raised their two boys, Jeff and Matt, while building and renovating many houses in the Sunnyside area.

Marilyn worked for United Telephone Company and Cascade Natural Gas until her retirement in 2004.

Marilyn enjoyed crocheting, traveling to car shows with Jerry, and spending time with friends and family.

During her life, Marilyn was active in developing tourism in Sunnyside as a board member of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and the first female scout master for her son's scout troop.

In her retirement, she enjoyed studying her family genealogy. Marilyn had a natural ability to touch all those who knew her with her positive attitude and unwavering compassion.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Jerry; two sons, Jeff (Karen) and Matt (Michelle); one brother, Dennis (Judy); one sister, Marsha; four grandchildren, Nathan, Jason (Kassi), Tyler and Megan; and many nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Frank Van Atta; and brother, Davy.

Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel, 528 S. 8th Street in Sunnyside.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Marilyn's name.
