RICHLAND - That magical spark the Sunnyside High School girls bowling team captured at the end of the regular season went up in a poof of smoke at yesterday's District tournament match-up against the Hanford Falcons.
Facing a loser-out proposition, with the winner earning the right to move on to today's Regional tourney in Yakima, Sunnyside dropped a 3-1 decision to the Falcons at Richland's Atomic Lanes Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Grizzlies, winners of their final three regular season matches after starting the season with a record of 1-10, came up 44 pins short in yesterday's opening game against Hanford (698-654).
The Falcons then basically secured the win by posting a 773-686 victory in game two.
A 167-122 decision in the first of the two Baker games finalized the deal for Hanford. Sunnyside averted the shutout by taking the second Baker game, 136-99.
For the winners, three of the five bowlers topped the two-game 300 series plateau - Kendal Sauressig with a 329 (158-171), Robin Hansen with a 308 (153-155) and Ainsley Gettis with a 304 (155-149).
Sunnyside's top individual effort was turned in by Adriana Lopez. She rolled games of 137-159 for a 296 series. Just a few pins back of Lopez were teammates Shantana Schneider with a series of 281 (159-122) and Johanna Chumley with a 278 series (120-158). Also competing for the Lady Grizzlies were Brianna Esqueda (132-116) and Maria Casas (106-131).
Sunnyside's final overall record on the 2012-13 season ended up being 4-12.
