Ernest "Harold" Franklin, 75, of Sunnyside entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones.
Harold was born July 17, 1937 in Yakima to Orvis and Maxine Franklin. He attended various schools in the valley.
On May 4, 1955 Harold and his uncle John Bailey joined the U.S. Navy. He served two years active duty and 10 years in the reserves. Harold received the China service Medal (extended) and Good Conduct Medal (1st award).
Harold worked for several farmers on the Roza including his uncle, Robert S. Williams. While working for Uncle Bob he met his future wife, Evelyn Hill, who was picking grapes. They were united in marriage on March 26, 1965. They made their home in Prosser.
In February of 1970 Harold and Evelyn moved to Horse Heaven Hills, where he worked for Earl Walker.
Harold attended the Grace Bretheren Church while living in Prosser.
On Sept. 1, 1972 he started his 30-year employment with Bert's Excavating in Sunnyside, where he was a heavy equipment operator.
He loved to hunt, fish and go camping. His favorite places were the Tucannon River, Mad River, Clear Lake and Trout Lake area.
He loved spending time with family and friends and relaxing and having a cold one.
After his retirement he enjoyed taking his grandson, Jason to school in the morning, working in the garden, sitting at the kitchen table playing solitaire and visiting with his grandkids.
Harold is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn of Sunnyside; daughter, Rosie (Alvin) Peters of Sunnyside; sons, Larry of Bickleton and Ron Baker of Tri-Cities; grandchildren, James and Amber Walker of Bloomington Springs, Tenn., Doni Franklin of Bickleton, Bobby Franklin and Jason Franklin, both of Sunnyside, and Drew and Kevin Baker of Tri-Cities; sisters, Patsy Paeschke of Prosser, Ginger (Mike) Roberts of Payette, Idaho; brothers, Wayne Franklin of Elyria, Ohio, Don (Sandy) Franklin of Payette; and sister-in-law, Judy Franklin of Caldwell, Idaho; aunt, Vivian Williams of Prosser; and uncle, John Bailey of Superior, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Bert Hill of Post Falls, Idaho and Don (Shirley) Hill of Union Gap; and many nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orvis and Maxine Franklin; grandparents, Obie and Maggie Bailey and Ernest and Lillian Franklin; his beloved daughter, Lynn Walker; brother, Charles Franklin; brother-in-law, John Paeschke; sister-in-law, Sandy Franklin; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gordon and Rosie Hill; and sister-in-law, Illa Hill; three great-nephews; and one-niece.

Visitation will be held Wednesday Jan. 30, 2013, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church in Sunnyside, with graveside services to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
