SEATTLE - The Sunnyside High School cheerleaders may not have earned a top 3 trophy, but they are happy for the experience of attending their first-ever State competition.
Alejandra Bobadilla is their advisor. She said the team didn't anticipate the opportunity to attend the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Cheerleading and Salute to Spirit competition, which was this past Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena at "Hec" Edmundson Pavilion on the campus of the University of Washington.
"The girls had a lot of fun and thought it was an amazing learning experience," said Bobadilla.
The team scored 171 points, earning seventh place honors in the non-tumbling 3A division. Meadowdale won championship honors with 246 points.
Bobadilla said the SHS squad performed all its stunts successfully and is proud of its performance.
"We were one of the few teams representing the Yakima Valley," she said, noting West Valley-Yakima and Selah also competed, but in 2A competition.
Bobadilla said the senior SHS cheerleaders felt the experience of competing at the State level was the highlight of their year.
"I was proud of representing our community of Sunnyside in a very positive way," she said.
