OLYMPIA - Two 15th District lawmakers, Sen. Jim Honeyford and Rep. Bruce Chandler, recently submitted further proposals to address the Yakima Valley's water storage concerns.
This week Honeyford (R-Sunnyside) submitted SB 5367 authorizing the Department of Ecology to start implementing an integrated water management plan for the Yakima River Basin addressing both water storage and fish habitat needs.
Honeyford's bill is a companion to HB 1414 submitted by Chandler (R-Granger), which also calls for implementing the basin plan.
In other water-related legislative proposals, Chandler has submitted HB 1350, authorizing counties to establish quantity limits on water for new domestic uses.
Honeyford has also put forward SB 5219, which would allow transfer of unused water rights belonging to state agencies to a water trust account "...to assure the vitality of local economies."
